FAQs
Your Questions, Answered
I’m planning to transition out of my business in the future. What should I be doing now to prepare?
Preparing for a successful exit doesn’t happen overnight. It takes intentional and advanced planning. The earlier you start, the more options available to maximize the value of your business and minimize your tax burden. When we work with you, our first step is to meet with you and visit your operation. We discuss your goals, timeline, and unique circumstances. From there, we draw on the expertise of our team, including our Certified Exit Planning Advisor™, to tailor a strategic business plan. When the time is right, we can also offer you business valuation services with an in-house Certified Valuation Analyst. You will learn how to strengthen your business today, prepare for due diligence, and develop tax-efficient structures for your eventual transition. Our role is to be your proactive partner throughout the process. By aligning exit planning with strategic tax planning, we help you position your business for a smooth transition aligned with your goals.
What’s the difference between tax planning and tax preparation, and when should each happen?
We love this question because to us planning = prepared. Tax planning is focused on taking a proactive approach prior to a situation occurring, whether you’re looking at your business, personal finances or the cross-section of the two. The key question is “what can I do now to set me up for future success/gains?” Planning integrates strategy (the fun stuff for us!) with compliance to minimize your aggregated tax exposure through analysis and scenario-building, help you work towards long-term goals and make sound decisions. Tax preparation, on the other hand, is focused on what has already occurred—we are gathering key documents from you, appropriately applying deductions and credits and filing returns (typically annually) based on past activities with the goal of accuracy and on-time delivery. It’s never too late to begin tax planning and we always recommend planning and prep so that you can understand the full picture.
